St. Mary's Parish, Trinity
Episcopal Church, St. Mary’s City, Maryland, in the Episcopal Diocese of

Director
of Music Job Description
- Work
with rector, organist, and chapel musician to select weekly hymns for both
Trinity
Church
and St.
Mary’s Chapel, and provide them to office staff responsible for bulletin
preparation. Selections should
be liturgically appropriate and suited to the Church Year calendar of the
appropriate lectionary cycle.
- Recruit
and train new choir members from the congregation. Work with college music
department staff to recruit, audition, select and train student section
leaders.
- Be
responsible for direct oversight of the choir including selection of
anthems, musical direction at rehearsals, and presentations at the regularly
scheduled services and special events. Teach the congregation when using
unfamiliar hymns and service music.
- Work
with Chapel musicians to nurture and grow the music ministry for that
congregation
- Work
closely with organist, clergy and vergers to facilitate flow of the service
- Direct
music for worship services with attention to the liturgical year, including
special or seasonal services with musical programs at Holy Week, Easter,
Christmas, Epiphany and other special liturgical occasions as scheduled.
- Identify,
recruit and support special music offerings (solos, quartets, instrumental,
etc.)
- Provide
articles for church newsletter (The Chimes) and weekly bulletin information.
- Attend
church staff meetings and regular worship planning meetings as scheduled
- Collaborate
with the rector, treasurer and financial officer to develop the annual music
budget, and submit monthly invoices to the financial officer to facilitate
timely payment of student section leaders and other guest musicians.
- The
music director will work as an independent contractor and be responsible for
his/her own income tax and self-employment tax withholding.
- Maintain
music library, including purchasing new music when appropriate
- Report
directly to Rector of St. Mary’s Parish
- Provide
periodic and annual reports to the rector, Vestry and annual parish meeting
- Coordinate
holidays, time off and sick leave with the rector, and arrange for
substitute coverage as needed.
Compensation
will be based on level of training and experience in accordance with Church
Musician Compensation Scales published each year in the Personnel Policies &
Guidelines of the Diocese of
Washington
.
Director
of Music Position Requirements
- Committed
to Christ
- Well-versed
in a variety of musical genres, especially those traditionally used in
Anglican worship
- Flexible
and able to address the needs of two diverse congregations and consider the
great diversity of musical tastes within each congregation
- Familiar
with the worship structure and the organization of Episcopal liturgy
- Experienced
in church music and preferably hold a degree in music (performance, theory,
etc.)
