    Bloody Bonsai
The first of the James Dandy ELDERHOSTEL Mysteries, weaves adventure and romance into a tale of blood, bonsai, and murder.

When everyone pushed widower James Dandy into going on a senior citizen ELDERHOSTEL, romance was the last thing on his mind. No. The last thing on his mind was to find a busboy with a bonsai tree sticking out of his chest. No. The last thing was to be read his rights for killing the sleazy little man. Nor did it help that his new romance, widow Dodee Swisher, wanted them to track down the real killer themselves. Then again, maybe it did.

    Killing Thyme
The second of the James P. Dandy ELDERHOSTEL Mysteries reunites Jim Dandy and Dodee Swisher at the Chef's Culinary College of Baltimore, where the recipe of the day is murder.

The only reason Jim Dandy went on the Flavors of the Mediterranean ELDERHOSTEL was to meet Dodee Swisher again. And he took it in stride when he found out a Chef's Round Robin had been substituted for the morning program. After all, the art of cuisine was supposed to be a fun bonus. And it was, until a couple of chefs expired on the spot from things they ate. It took some of the fun out of eating. Oh yeah. Then things got interesting when a fellow Elderhosteler ended up under a bus. Oh yeah. And was he happy that Dodee got him wrapped in solving the mystery? Ooooh yeah.

Killing Thyme has a pub-date of August/September 1999. Autographed copies may be reserved through the publisher, Write Way Publishing, Ph. (800) 680-1493. E-mail Peter Abresch.

    Adventures in fiction writing techniques
    BookMarc© subject for the week:
BookMarc © is a series of discussions, lessons, studies, lectures, dissertations--wow, really getting fancy now--precepts, or treatises on fiction writing techniques. Basic stuff like stringing words together, to more complicated stuff later on like the big three, plotting, characterization, and effective writing, stuff I wish I had known twenty years ago. I hope it's entertaining as well as educational, an adventure in fiction writing techniques. And what the heck, the price is right. Right?
I'll try to post them once a week, and hopefully we'll learn together. There used to be an one-block cartoon philosopher in the papers of old, and one of the quotes I remember is, "We grow too old too soon and too smart too late." Perhaps we can grow "too smart" without too much more "too late."
I invite you on this fiction-writing journey, to solve some of the problems of which Hemingway said, "We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master."
If you feel like it, climb aboard.

          Word Spinner

    With Your help
    I can spin words
    into gold,
    weld word chains
    strong enough
to drag mountains to the sea,
    plant word gardens so real
    birds sing and flowers bloom
and jasmine floats on the air.
    Without Your touch,
    I cannot even
    say my name.
